Quilt show: 2009 featured quilter Lynn Cooper

Photo of Lynn Cooper with quiltLynn Cooper first joined the Foothill Quilt Guild around 1990. At that time the idea of making a nametag was overwhelming to her and she did not last long. She decided to wait until she retired to quilt.

Her first quilting experience was made possible by her grandmother as she made quilts and Lynn inherited a quilt top of hers. Lynn had it around for a while and in the early 70’s she decided to hand quilt it. A friend had given her a quilting frame that was held together with C clamps. She sandwiched the quilt, put it in the frame and hung the frame from the ceiling of her bedroom. She hand quilted it using polyester batting, a blend for the backing, big stitches, and little actual quilting. She has recently taken that apart and had it machine quilted.

After she retired she took a quilting class from Dell Higley at the Auburn Adult School and joined the guild again. This time it took.

She has loved art and drawing all her life but did not take any formal art classes until after she started quilting. She realized that taking studio and theory art classes would help her quilt making. For several years she took classes at Sierra College.

As a guild member she has been Workshop Chair for three years and NCQC Chair, worked on many shows, and made blocks for many opportunity quilts.

Like any activity that engages her, she loves to explore new parts of the whole quilt world. She loves the constantly expanding knowledge she discovers as she peruses some new aspect of quilting and she cannot say that there is one part that she loves more than another.

Not too long after she took up the art again, two of her quilts won best of show two consecutive years at Foothill Quilt Show. She has had quilts in PIQF, the Studio Art Quilters California show at the California Heritage Museum in Santa Monica, the Marin Quilt Show, and the Arts Building show. She has also been a featured artist at the Auburn Art Walk.

quilt photoShe is currently teaching at Cabin Fever Quilt Shoppe as she has found she loves to teach. Her specialty is traditional quilting, the techniques used in making the Dear Jane quilt, hand appliqué, hand piecing and pattern drafting.

Lynn has three daughters and sons-in-law, seven granddaughters, one grandson, three great-grand children. When they get together they are a loud, energetic bunch. She is retired from Placer County and has lived in Auburn about 26 years. She has always lived in California and was born in Sonora.
